Dele Momodu Writes Buhari, Says Nigerians Are Lamenting

Dele Momodu Writes Buhari, Says Nigerians Are Lamenting

Your Excellency, it’s been months since I wrote my desperate memo to you. I wish to thank you once more for reacting promptly and swiftly at that time and for giving me the honour and privilege of meeting you in your office. I remember presenting you a special compilation of my articles, especially the many admonitions to your immediate predecessor, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

After handing over the book to you, Sir, I promised to continue acting in my self-appointed capacity as Special Adviser because of the need to tell you what those very close to you might not be able to say. They might be afraid of you and your reaction.

The truth is you are a plain and simple man imbued with a mission and a passion to save this great country but you cannot do it on your own. You can only do it if people close to you, who should be advising you, tell you as it is so that you can do that which you were elected to do.

Sir, it is on the above basis that I’m back today for reasons some of which you probably know already from your own personal observations and readings. But before I go further, kindly permit me to set some records straight before some conspiracy specialists step forward to ascribe other people’s opinion to me. I shall clearly expose my personal views and state where I belong or stand for any avoidance of doubt. Everywhere I go people refer to me as Buhari’s man and ask “what’s your Baba doing ooo?”. I seriously have no problem with that. I’m proud that I joined so many other Nigerians as well as foreign friends in supporting a man of impeccable pedigree and solid integrity. No matter your view of President Muhammadu Buhari, one thing his bitterest enemies give to him is the fact that he is way above the level of most mortals in matters of uprightness.

This is why many of us volunteered to scream your name to high heavens and we were ready to follow you to Golgotha. Many of your opponents have not gotten over the thrashing you gave them and would forever seek everything and anything to smear you with. It is therefore not surprising that there has been so much noise about what you’ve done or left undone. Whether they are right or wrong in their assessment, I feel it is right and proper to let you know what people are saying about you including your most ardent fans and supporters. Sir, please, let’s not dismiss them as mere rabble-rousers. A groundswell of public opinion can easily metamorphose into an ocean of disenchantment and cataclysmic confusion. In short, I believe your enemies are skilfully setting you up for failure in order to be able to taunt your supporters later by saying we “we told you so!” In this regard it is pertinent to always bear in mind the Yoruba saying ‘ehin kunle l’ota wa, ile ni a se ni ngbe’! Loosely translated it means “the enemy lurk outside in the backyard but your foe resides inside your house.”

What is the matter this time? Many Nigerians are lamenting that the change you promised them is fast becoming a mirage. It is certainly not what they are seeing right now. They insist that your style and methodology appear too slow for a nation in dire straits and in need of urgent and miraculous deliverance. They are not happy that you are no longer the prudent man they used to know. They think you’ve already capitulated by frolicking with members of the bourgeois class and junketing around the world while Nigeria burns like Dante’s inferno. They are miffed that you are still keeping the Presidential fleet when you are supposed to have sold most of them off, if not all. They are worried that the mandate of four years they gave you is being unwittingly frittered away and before you know it all the goodwill you garnered would have evaporated and vamoosed. Time, they say, waits for no man!

The economy and the free fall of the Naira have become worrisome. There are all manner of rumours that may make matters worse, if true, about the current state and status of our banks. Though the Central Bank of Nigeria has come out forcefully to dispel the dangerous rumours, they want you to unleash your economic master-plan as soon as possible, so that what was once a baseless rumour does not somehow become harsh reality. They are expecting a blue-print that would guarantee a farewell to poverty. On this I agree with the opinion that something drastic has to be conjured up to arrest this drift to perdition. Nothing amplifies this monumental tragedy than the debit card fiasco which stipulates that Nigerians cannot live in a civilised world by walking into any international hotel or shop of their choice and paying with their cards. This is terriribly depressing.

What this means in plain terms is that Nigerians must patronise the black market and run the risk of carrying cash recklessly whenever they travel abroad. It makes a mockery of the cashless society that the CBN has fought so hard to put in place and jeopardises your fight against corruption because government officials who travel abroad must of necessity carry large sums of cash if they are not to be embarrassed or even disgraced. Sir, the most important thing is that this is not healthy at all. The last thing your Government should be telling the world is that we are so broke that we are on our knees. The world laughs at us and treats us with derision because we have resources other than crude oil which should make us one of the richest in the world if we properly harness them. We must stop giving the impression that we are so impoverished when it is leadership, brigandage and a lack of focus that has failed us.

The other matter that continues to embarrass Nigerians is the issue of Boko Haram. The matter is made worse by the fact that you are a retired army General who should know and have what it takes to drastically reduce if not exterminate the cankerworm. But rather the menace has exacerbated. It has snowballed into a seemingly unquenchable conflagration. I had argued repeatedly that the military alone cannot achieve this result. Intelligence seems to be the key word here. Also identifying and locating some of the cells and prominent sympathisers is crucial. Those who arrogantly and naively say that no form of negotiation should take place are very far from the theatre of war. They have probably not heard of a group called IRA, the Irish Republican Army, that terrorised Great Britain for God knows how many years. I and my directors at Ovation International were lucky to escape a massive explosion that shattered the peace and tranquillity of London Docklands when a bomb went off inside the South Quay light rail station which was next to our office at Beaufort Court. The battle of wits and the war of attrition had to be fought using the carrot and the stick approach. It was the carrot approach that eventually succeeded and the United Kingdom has now been rid of that hitherto interminable scourge for many years!

The Boko Haram issue has defied every effort made so far and it is time to expand the options for the sake of our fellow citizens in the heart of this conundrum. When over 200 girls vanished into thin air, we were so sure they would return very soon but that has remained an illusion. This should tell us that this issue is not a joke and that we need to keep all windows open. Sir, Nigerians want to see government show a different approach and better compassion than what we had in the past. They are waiting to see how you will do this with minimum collateral damage.

Sir, you have a herculean task ahead but it is not a mission impossible. Other nations are experiencing almost similar challenges and they are forging ahead. The first indicator to exhibit our seriousness is when we stop the business as usual syndrome and tighten the belts of government officials and politicians. If the idea is to continue along the path of profligacy then Nigeria is contagiously jinxed. The Republic of Tanzania has already taken the lead. I will publish a report that has already gone viral below this letter as a veritable example of what is possible.

I wish you well as always Sir.

How To Protect Your Eyes From Computers And Mobile Screens

How To Protect Your Eyes From Computers And Mobile Screens

The eyes are the light of the body, and they need protection, else we are doomed. The following guide will teach us how to protect our eyes from the inescapable prolonged use and stare at digital computer and mobile screens like desktops, laptops, iPad, tablets, and phones. We are in a full-blown digital age. We use computers to do a lot these days – to work, to play, to communicate, and many more.

So, for a lot of people, to survive means staring at computer and mobile screens for a long length of hours in a day. For example, my friend is a banker. He works with the computer all day. And these computers are right in front of his eyes. Also, to communicate, he may have to look at his phone screen for a period of time each day to call, chat, et cetera.

While reading this post, you are 100 percent most likely staring at your computer screen or phone screen! And this article may take you at least 5 minutes to read.

This close-rage stare will sure have effects, if not now, but someday on our eyes. What can we do to minimise, if not eradicate any possible side-effects of this close-range romance between our eyes and these screens? An extract from Dr. Nelson’s EyeCare Blog gives a guide.

Computer or digital vision syndrome can be prevented or reduced if the individual controls the lighting and glare on the computer screen, establish and maintain a proper working distance and posture for viewing the screen and correct his or her refractive error no matter how minor they might be.

In addition, the following steps will help minimize the visual symptoms associated with computer vision syndrome.

Avoid Reflections – Avoid Glare: Reduce glare on your computer screen by closing any nearby window (or use curtains) from which the glare is reaching your computer screen. You can also move your monitor a little bit until the glare disappears. Cover your lamps and bulbs with glare screens and cover your monitor, tablet and cell phone with glare filter.

Accessibility – Adjust your computer Settings: Adjust your computer font size, brightness and contrast until you get the adjustment that suits your vision. The individual is advised to increase the computer font size, reduce the brightness and normalize the contrast until he or she is comfortable.

Angle Matters – Position your Monitor Properly: Position your monitor slightly below (4-6 inches) your eye level and 20-28 inches away from you. To prevent looking up at your screen and back down at your desk while typing, put your typing material on a stand and place it near your monitor. At this position, you won’t be stretching your neck or strain your eyes to see what’s on the monitor and your typing material.

Relax – Take a Break: Always look away from your monitor every 20 minutes before you continue with your computer work. Blink as often as possible while working on your computer to keep your eyes moist and if your eyes are getting unnecessarily dry, visit an optometrist for lubricating eye drops.

Regular Check Up – Visit your Eye Doctor: Thorough eye examination by an optometrist will review the cause of these visual symptoms because some of the conditions causing computer vision syndrome are refractive error related. Hence the optometrist will determine if you need glasses, contact lenses, special computer glasses or lubricating eye drops.

Naira Depreciates Barely 48 Hours After It Strengthened Against The Dollar

The naira on Friday depreciated at the parallel market barely 48 hours after it strengthened against the dollar.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the naira lost N2 to exchange at N242 to the dollar, as against its previous value of N240.

Meanwhile, the official inter-bank rate remained at N197 to the dollar.

Traders at the market said that in spite of the biweekly sale of forex to Bureaux de Change (BDC’s), the currency of the biggest economy in Africa continued to slide.

They attributed the development to the difficulty encountered by some BDC operators in disposing their forex due to the apex banks regulation on forex sales.

Fayose To Buhari: Tell Nigerians Who The Looters Are, How Much They Returned

Fayose To Buhari: Tell Nigerians Who The Looters Are, How Much They Returned

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, on Thursday, berated President Muhammadu Buhari’s claim that many of those who looted the public treasuries in the government of former President Goodluck Jonathan had started returning the stolen funds to the government, saying the President should rather stay at home to govern the country instead of junketing around the globe and acting like a saint before the international community.

In a statement issued in in Ado-Ekiti by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose challenged President Buhari to tell Nigerians how much was returned and the looters who returned the stolen funds, adding that “Since the purported looted funds belong to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, it ought to have been paid into the Federation Account and shared by the Federal, State and Local Government.”

Fayose advised Buhari to tackle the collapsed economy of the country headlong, instead of going from one country to another, casting aspersion on Nigerians with his sing-song of fighting corruption.

He said the President’s attitude was yet to change from that of 1984 when he was military Head of State, adding that, “Buhari’s statement in Tehran, Iran that it was easier for him as a military Head of State in 1984 to arrest corrupt individuals and put them in protective custody was a pointer to the fact that he has not changed from the dictator that he was then.

“The truth is that Buhari did not fight corruption in 1984. Rather, he persecuted great Nigerians, especially the likes Chief Adekunle Ajasin, Chief Ambrose Ali, Chief Bisi Onabanjo, Alhaji Lateef Jakande and Chief Bola Ige, who served the people meritoriously. Is Buhari justifying the imprisonment of Dr Alex Ekwueme, who was only the Vice President or All Progressives Congress (APC) leader like Chief Bisi Akande, who only served as a Deputy Governor?”

While urging the President to stop acting like the sole-administrator of Nigeria and the only honest man among Nigerians, Governor Fayose said: “Nigerians are desirous of concrete developments, not rhetoric about fight against corruption that is only being used to persecute perceived political enemies of the President both in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and within the APC.

“As at today, Nigerians are faced with serious hardship occasioned by prolonged fuel scarcity that the Federal Government does not have any solution to. Multi-national companies are laying-off thousands of workers while contractors working for the Federal Government have left their sites.

“Yet, what we get to hear from the President is noise in foreign lands about non-existing fight against corruption. Honestly, this President should get to work and stop lying to Nigerians and the international community.”

Two Ghanaians Arrested In Amsterdam For Pounding Fufu In Their Flat On 7th Floor

Two Ghanaians Arrested In Amsterdam For Pounding Fufu In Their Flat On 7th Floor

Amsterdam would pass as second Kumasi—with several Ghanaians having made the place their first home because of the high standard of living and countless economic opportunities the capital of Netherlands presents.

Of course with such great opportunities and order come the laws which make the country attractive; and everyone living in Netherlands, even if from the Amazon forest or Tuobodom must abide by the laws of the land.

But Ghanaians love their fufu and light soup and though the Dutch do not really have a problem with Ghanaians eating their local dishes, the cooking/preparation must all be done within the laws of the land.

The people of Netherlands are extensive liberal and that explains why for many years, places like Bijlmer Arena with a huge Ghanaian population, literally and metaphorically constantly filled with the aroma of ‘Prekese’ still has several whites living there.

In spite of the liberal mindset and the immeasurable hospitality of the Dutch, they do not joke with their nuisance laws—the reason why Holland is peaceful, clean and orderly.

For two Ghanaians living at Bijlmer Arena in Amsterdam, the Neat Fufu which almost every Ghanaian abroad have to eat in place of the actual pounded fufu Ghanaians enjoy back home is not enough—to be frank, it does not taste and feel like the real fufu.

So after many years of struggling to eat Neat Fufu and their Prekese soup, the satisfaction kept depreciating and the hanker for the real pounded fufu kept growing.

Therefore, during their recent visit to Ghana, they managed to bring fufu Mortar and Pestle via KLM to Amsterdam—and around 10pm last week after they returned from work, they started their fufu pounding in their flat on the 7th floor.

According to police sources, about 15 neighbours who were being disturbed by the heavy pounding kept calling to report the nuisance.

Eventually when the police stormed the apartment, the two had finished pounding their fufu and were settled, ready to eat.

They were arrested for nuisance—a warning was not enough, because these same couple had already been warned 3 times, 2 for playing loud Amakye Dede songs at night—and the other, for unnecessary car beeping when they drive pass their friends.

During the arrest, ScrewLife.Com is told the couple begged the police to allow them to at least finish eating their fufu and Prekese soup, with crabs swimming all over in the soup.

But the police refused because they did not have time to wait around. The two will soon appear before a judge with a short prison sentence and fine hanging around their necks.

EFCC Arrests APC Chieftain For Contract Scam

EFCC Arrests APC Chieftain For Contract Scam

Mr. Miebi Bribena, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Bayelsa State, has been reportedly arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over alleged contract scam at the Presidential Amnesty Programme.

Bribena, said to be a major beneficiary of the PAP Amnesty, was arrested early on Wednesday by operatives of the anti-graft agency.

He was said to have be taken to the agency’s headquarters in Wuse in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, where he was quizzed for several hours.

He was still being detained at the EFCC office as of the time of this report.

It was learnt that Bribena was being interrogated over allegations that he absconded after collecting huge mobilisation fees from the Amnesty office without executing the contract for which he was paid.

Bribena was said to have collected about 95 per cent of the contract sum but that nothing was on the ground to justify the amount collected.

The Director, Media and Publicity, Sylva-Igiri Campaign Organisation, Chief Nathan Egba, while reacting to Bribena’s arrest, said he had not been fully briefed on the matter.

He, however, clarified that Bribena was not a spokesman for Sylva but a member of the APC.

“If the arrest is true, it means that Muhammadu Buhari is a President who does not shield anybody from corruption, irrespective of whether you are an APC member or not. However, I have not been fully briefed on the matter,” he said.

How to Schedule Instagram Posts on iPhone and Android

How to Schedule Instagram Posts on iPhone and Android

If you’re a social media manager, there are tools like Buffer and Hootsuite to make your life easier. You can schedule a week’s worth of posts in advance and they’ll go out to Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and even LinkedIn without any issue. One name that’s always absent from this list is Instagram.

From all the above social networks, Instagram is the only one that’s still considered “cool”. Naturally, marketers want to use Instagram to reach a larger audience, but Instagram doesn’t seem to care that much. The reason it’s not supported by the likes of Buffer is that it doesn’t have an extensive API. Meaning that a third party app can’t plug into your Instagram account and post anything on your behalf.

So if there’s no automated posting for Instagram, how exactly can you schedule ahead? By using 1 cup of automation with a teaspoon of old-time manual labor.

Scheduling Your Instagram Posts with TakeOff

Right now, TakeOff (iPhone, Android) is one of the few apps that allow you to schedule posts for Instagram. This is how it works. You choose a photo or video, crop it down to an Instagram-friendly square, write a caption, and then select a time.

Then, at the time specified, you’ll get a notification saying your post is now ready.

You’ll be taken to Instagram where you can add filters, edit the caption, and then share the image/video.

For you, the social media manager who’s supposed to post 10 times a week to Instagram either on a schedule or randomly, TakeOff can solve a large chunk of your problem.

You can sit down and create your 10 posts at once just how you like them, complete with captions and hashtags (but not filters). When you get the notification, all you have to do is tap a couple of buttons to post the update. To me, that sounds better than taking the time out to write a post 10 separate times in a week.

TakeOff is also a little bit intelligent. It will take a look at your profile history and suggest the best time to post. You can also specify how many posts you want to make in a day.

Talking About the App Itself

TakeOff is an app from the folks over at Crowdfire. Crowdfire is an app for increasing your social engagement. There are similar elements here as well. For instance, you can’t just start using the app. You need to wait for an invite. This shows up in a couple of minutes via a notification. This is quite dumb – there’s no reason for this to exist other than the false sense of importance TakeOff exhibits. Then, TakeOff asks you to create an account “for security reasons”. But c’mon guys, if you want to grow your email list, you might as well just ask.

TakeOff assumes that if you’re using the app, you’re out there to get as many likes as you want, no matter how. And it automatically embeds like-grabbing (kind of spammy) hashtags that you need to disable. For someone who’s serious about using TakeOff to manage their accounts, this can be a big turn off.

Lastly, TakeOff does support multiple accounts, but it’s not clear how. Because ultimately you’re posting from the Instagram app, which does not support multiple accounts. It’s a paid feature (I was not able to test it) and both iPhone and Android apps showed me different plans. On iOS the plans start at $9.99 a year for 2 accounts and on Android it’s just one $30, 5 accounts plan.

Even though the ultimate posting process is manual, the simple act of readying the Instagram posts in bulk beforehand with TakeOff will make your life that much easier.

Bomb Blast Raids Kastina Mosque

Bomb Blast Raids Kastina Mosque

Explosion rocked a mosque at Yartabki village near the headquarters of Funtua local government in Katsina state, on Tuesday. Aminu Sadiq, the police public relations officer in the state, confirmed the incident to NAN, but said no one was injured, and that “severe damage” was not done to the mosque. He said a suspect had been arrested, disclosing that two mobile cell phones and remnants of the explosives were also recovered. Sadiq added that the recovered items were being ascertained by experts.

The worshippers, who were reportedly scared after spotting a black polythene bag inside the mosque, informed the police, but the explosives detonated before the arrival of the security team. According to NAN, the paint on the wall and carpets of the mosque got burnt.

Though the police have not revealed the identity of the attackers, Boko Haram insurgents are the prime suspects. Katsina, the state of President Muhammadu Buhari, is one of the few northern states, where the sect has not been able to operate.

The last known insurgent attack in Katsina occurred at Daura, the hometown of the president, in 2013. Eleven persons, including soldiers and policemen, were killed during that attack.

No Wearing Of Hijab In NYSC Camps, DG Insists

No Wearing Of Hijab In NYSC Camps, DG Insists

A group of Muslim youths under the aegis of Muslim Youths in Da’wah on Tuesday at the headquarters of the National Youth Service Corps in Abuja protested against the ban on the use of hijab by female Muslim corps members, especially during orientation camps.

But the Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier-General, Johnson Olawumi, insisted on the ban, saying it was “for security reasons.”

The national coordinator of LMYiD, Luqman Hassan; and the Deputy Coordinator, Kamarudeen Adefila, had told the NYSC DG that a major protest by Muslims was averted because of the ban on hijab in most orientation camps.

Hassan told the DG, “We are here to discuss with you about the incident that happened recently in various camps across the country. We have a guiding principle which is based on the Holy Q’uran. We are all Nigerians and the principle which guides us is the constitution and the African Charter on Human rights.

“Members of the NYSC are Nigerians who have contributed to the development of this country; female corps members deserve protection by the NYSC. We don’t believe that a female corps member putting on hijab has done any wrong against the Act establishing the NYSC. So they deserve the respect of the NYSC. We have travelled far and wide and visited different camps. Why are the rights of female corps members being infringed upon. We are here to register our displeasure.”

“Many Muslim organisations wanted to protest, but we said wait a while. In fact, we have to intervene to avoid the situation and if Muslims march on the streets, it will attract a lot of negative comments, but people won’t know why we are protesting,” Adefila had added.

In his response, Olawumi said, “Under my leadership, the NYSC will accord respect to every corps member, irrespective of tribe and religion. The incident in Benue State was caused by the use of long hijab. The security situation in the country is tough. There is the danger of somebody using hijab for other reasons.

“There have been cases where young girls put on hijab and eventually turn to suicide bombers. Boko Haram members know how to get at whoever they want as target. That is why we frown at the wearing of long hijab. Please call on all your Muslim youths to be patient and adhere to it, just for a short period during the camp. We frown at long hijab because of the security implication.”

The NYSC DG expressed disappointment in the allegation by the visiting youths.

“Why are you so particular on your alleged infraction on the rights of youths without mentioning any one of such on Christian youths? Produce your evidence, write to us and I can assure you that we will act fast. When the incident in Benue State was reported to us, I swung into action and ensured that the camp commandant was decamped immediately. We are not magicians; if you have any evidence, write to us and we will not hesitate to act.”

The NYSC Legal Adviser, Ahmed Tijani Ibrahim, said the incident in Benue State was under investigation.

He said, “I’m a Muslim and in our camps, I know that we have treated everybody equally. You mentioned the fact that you would have proceeded to protest. Very minor issues could trigger off mass protest.

“We will see the way forward to this complaint. I can assure you that the issue will not be swept under the carpet. The NYSC is very sensitive to the issue of religion and immediately we heard of it, we swung into action and we are on it because issues of religion are very sensitive.”

Prisons Are Better Than Our Hostels - OAU Students Cry Out

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, which is owned by the federal government is one of the first generation universities in Nigeria, and it prides itself as the leader among other universities in the country.

In fact, the alumni of the university often claim that OAU is the most beautiful campus in Africa. Founded in 1961 as the University of Ife by the regional government of Western Nigeria and renamed Obafemi Awolowo University on 12 of May 1987, in honour of the first premier of the Western Region of Nigeria, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, OAU is ranked as the most productive university in Nigeria by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The campus has an eye-catching landscape built on about 5,000 acres out of a total of 13,000 acres of land belonging to the university. Unfortunately, some of the facilities that once portrayed OAU as a beautiful campus, especially the students’ halls of residence, are decomposing and the rot bedevilling the university is now enormous. The beauty of the OAU students’ halls of residences has given way to decay due to neglect.

There are 8 halls of residence including Fajuyi, Awolowo, Angola and E.T.F for male students, while Moremi, Akintola, Alumni and Mozambique halls of residence are for female students. Signs of wear and tear were very visible on the long stretch of buildings when Daily Trust visited.

The living condition of the students in these halls of residence is pathetic. At the Awolowo Hall, our correspondent observed that the toilets were in bad state in most of the blocks. In one of the toilets, the closet had broken and the bathrooms reeked of fermented urine. The students lamented that the university authority was not carrying out renovation on the hostels. The motto of the university is, “For learning and culture” but owing to the bad condition of their hostels, the students have parodied this motto to “For learning and suffering.”

Mr Oladapo Rasheed, a 200 level student of the Linguistics department is the General Secretary of Awolowo Hall of residence. He told Daily Trust that bedbugs have colonised the hostel “Our mattresses are full of bedbugs owing to non-fumigation. We brought our mattresses from our respective homes, but over the time, the bedbug penetrated the mattresses because the environment is dirty. I once watched the movie titled prison break and the prison that I saw in that movie is better than our hostels in Ife.”

A 400 level student of Psychology, Mr Amos Ajileye said he has spent 4 years on the campus, and that he has never witnessed renovation of the hostels since he was admitted to OAU “I have spent 4 years in this university and I have never seen any renovation on our hostels, except the cleaners that usually come to sweep the floor and they don’t come during weekends. This is too bad and we want the authority to renovate the hostels,” he said.

Another 300 level student of Religious Studies, Mr Ifedapo Akinola also lamented the rot in the infrastructural facilities.

According to him, “There is serious infrastructural decay in our hostels. The condition of our toilets and the tank where we are fetching water is too bad. A section of the hostel collapsed recently, and that is the place where we wash and bath. No one was there when it collapsed. It would have killed some of us if any of us had been present . Should the management wait until we are killed before they would repair our hostel? It is better they do the repairs now.”

Mr Nwanegwo Uzor Amaka, a 400 level Civil Engineering student, also said their hostels could be mistaken for prison yards. Nwanegwo said “Prisoners are better than the condition here. I stay in block 5.We have no toilet and more than 10 students stay in a room meant for two students. We have 10 rooms on the block making 100 students in that block. Yet, there is no toilet for us. We bath outside because the condition of our bathroom is very bad.”

At the female hostel, the situation was similar to that of the male students hostels, in terms of infrastructural decay, but the environment was not too dirty. The female students were taking care of the surroundings of their hostels, unlike their male counterparts who relied solely on the cleaners to help them sweep the surrounding.

At Mozambique Hall, a 200 level student of Public Administration, Miss Adetayo Adetorera Anna is the hall chairperson ,and she was not happy about the living conditions in the hostels. She said, “The condition of our hostels is not pleasant. Our hostels are overcrowded. Take for instance, 24 students share one toilet. We fight to get water. We are battling with bedbugs. In fact, it was our hall warden that helped us to fumigate one of the rooms recently, when the issue of bedbugs became unbearable, and we had to go and report to the hall management.”

At Moremi Hall of residence, Miss Babanumi Oluwadamilola, a 300 level Law student also expressed worry over the living condition in their hostels. She was particular about the issue of toilets and urged the authority of the university to act on time and fix the infrastructures at the hostels. “Our toilets are in very bad shape and as a matter of fact, the hostels need repair. We are suffering seriously. We are not enjoying electricity and other facilities and it should not be so. Actually, the cleaners are trying, but there is a little they can clean on the rotten facilities,” Oluwadamilola said.

A 500 level Chemical Engineering student, Mr. Omotayo Akande is the President of OAU Student Union and he is not oblivious of the horrible living condition in the hostels. Akande is not relenting in the struggle for the welfare of the students. Speaking with Daily Trust, the Student Union President said that there is need to renovate the hostels and guard against overcrowding.

His words, “You can see the level of decay in our overpopulated hostels on the campus, that is supposedly the most beautiful campus in Africa. Under normal circumstances , a room is supposed to be occupied by the number of wardrobes you find there, and there are 2 wardrobes in most of the rooms. However, the rooms are allocated to 6 students officially, while squatters would also join the legal occupants.

Students are complaining of bedbugs. There are no good toilets and we are subjected to a condition that is not favourable to learning. In fact, we are afraid of an outbreak of diseases on this campus.”

“We have met the university authority and pleaded with them to take our welfare serious, but they haven’t done anything. I have spent five years on this campus and they have never renovated any of the hostels since I came to OAU. Imagine, OAU hostels cannot boast of stable power supply and potable water, yet, they said ours is the most beautiful campus in Africa. As student Union leaders, the students are harassing us, blaming us for not confronting the management over this issue, but we are helpless since the university authority turned deaf ears to our cries,” Akande lamented.

Reacting to the development, the Public Relation Officer of the university, Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju faulted the students’ claims as he blamed them for abusing the facilities in their hostels. He said the students overcrowded the hostels and overstretched the facilities.

“Everything that the students told you is not true. They caused the problem for themselves by overcrowding the hostels more than the capacity of the facilities in those buildings. In a situation where the university authority allocates a room for only four students, we will eventually realise that 12 students are living in that room and that puts unnecessary pressure on the facilities. They usually accommodate squatters in the rooms ,and it would be difficult for the university authority to chase out the squatters when the occupants of the rooms are not complaining. The students should stop blaming the university authority for the problem they caused themselves. On the issue of renovation, I can assure you that the university authority usually renovates the hostels during long vacations, and the students will meet the hostels neat. But they would dirty it within a few weeks of resumption. You know the students, if we allocate dirty hostels to them, they would protest. So, the hostels are usually neat at the beginning of the session but our students are in the habit of misusing the facilities in the hostels,” Olanrewaju said.

Heavy Biafra Protests in Aba Brings City to a Halt

Information got to us (TheBase.ng) about the ongoing protests by the angry crowd. It was a Biafran movement which is related to Nnamdi Kanu’s hearing in court today and #freeNnamdiKanu movement. The crowd was something I’ve never seen before. They moved in streams. Each consisting of about a hundred people. I cannot really quote the exact amount of people who participated in the movement but I can atleast speculate they were far above one thousand people including both men and women of different age brackets. Some who are in support gave some items such as water, fruits, etc… while other citizens stood and watched as the crowd moved past them in all manner of clothing. Flags of various sizes could be seen and pictures of Nnamdi Kanu. Below is a clip I managed to record and some pictures that might help you understand the extent.
