The police have arraigned a staff of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, before a chief magistrate’s court for concocting the kidnapping of her daughter with the intent of scoring a point over local unionism dispute.
Mrs. Joy Akpan had in March accused one Malam Alfa Gimba of kidnapping her daughter who is a nursing student of ABU. However, following investigations, the girl told the police that she was never kidnapped; rather she was asked by her mother to travel to her hometown in Cross River State.
The police also discovered that a local union dispute between the camps of Iliyasu Abdulra’uf Bello,
to which Akpan belongs, and Malam Gimba prompted the concoction of the abduction allegation.
The police First Information Report (FIR) obtained yesterday by Daily Trust indicated that Mrs. Joy Akpan is accused of criminal conspiracy to give false information with intent of misleading the public, and fabrication of false evidence in respect of the abduction of her daughter.
Police prosecutor, Inspector Aliyu Jibril, told the court that the offences are punishable under sections 97, 140 and 157 of the Penal Code.
After arguments between prosecution and defense counsel, Justice Awwal Musa Aliyu, granted Akpan bail in the sum of N100, 000, two sureties and adjourned the case to Wednesday, June 8for further mention.
